칼맞은 삼겹살 black pork bbq

While in Jeju if you’re able to eat pork one of the main special dishes to try is Jeju black pork bbq. Our hostel had a suggestion of a place nearby and since we got back a little earlier then expected on our first day we decided to give it a try. I’m not sure if we ended up at the right place since it seems like the name changed from Briquette house (연탄집) to  칼맞은 삼겹살 (which means knife samgyeopsal).

Upon entering they gave us a menu in English and we ordered the black pork bbq. One serving.

It wasn’t a lot of food for two to share and it was rather expensive, we were a bit disappointed, so we asked for the menu again. This time we picked out regular pork which was a bit cheaper.

It was good, but I think I’ve been spoiled by all you can eat places. Note: Even if you tell them you don’t want kimchi or more kimchi someone will notice your grill is empty and will refill it. Thankfully they put it at the lower end of the grill so your meat won’t be kimchi flavored but the kimchi will be a little meat flavored.

There’s also a famous street in Jeju city known for its black pork bbq. If I manage to go back to Jeju I’ll head there because it felt like we kept getting food we hadn’t ordered because they didn’t match the pictures. But it was tasty and filling.
